Tutors

Groups have volunteer tutors who have all passed the advanced test themselves at a high grade and have also been trained and assessed in order to meet the requirements to provide training for the advanced test. They will all be registered tutors with RoSPA Advanced Drivers and Riders and are covered by RoSPA's public liability insurance. Some approved tutors may have also undertaken further training in advanced driving instruction and have become advanced tutors. They also take retests every three years so you can be sure that you will receive a high level of training.

Tutors will sit in and 'observe' the driving of Associate Members and will offer advice and guidance to assist those members to prepare them for the Advanced Test. They will, from time to time, also do demonstration drives.

Tutors have to have a thorough knowledge of the subject before they can help to prepare Group Associates for the Test. This will include having a good knowledge of The Highway Code. More detailed explanations of advanced driving skills and concepts are contained in Roadcraft - The Police Driver's Handbook and Tutors will also have studied this book and have a good knowledge and understanding of its contents.
Advice is provided for free, by our Approved Group Tutors.

To receive training from SEWAD Tutors, all you need to do is join as an Associate Member. Once you have joined you will be assigned a Tutor, although there is sometimes a waiting list. Then it's up to you to arrange a time and place to meet and away you go. How long it takes you to be ready for your test will depend on how competent you are to start with, and then how often you meet your tutor and how much practice you do between sessions. The more you practice, the sooner you'll be ready!
